Marko in the TORTOUR DE SUISSE 2009 Print E-mail
Wednesday, 19 August 2009

After the 3rd place at this year's RAAM, Marko's season will finish with the participation in the inaugural Race around Switzerland otherwise known as the Tortour de Suisse. The race is 1.071km long and has 15.000m of elevation gain, going over some verywell known Alpine passes like Fluelapass, Julierpass, Oberalpass, St. Gotthardpass, Nufenenpass.

The race is held like a time trial under UMCA rules. On the start are 29 solo racers plus 14 three member teams and 6 six member teams, so more than 100 racers all together. THe favourite for the victory is RAAM winner Danny Wyss, the other candidates for the podium places are two other Suisse cyclists Thomas Ratschob (2nd in Race around Slovenia 2009) and Beny Furer (3 times participant of RAAM) and French rider Rico Hughes (twice the winner od Raid Provence Extreme).

One of the favourite is also Marko who says: »After the rigours of RAAM, regeneration went pretty well and soon I began thinking about new challenges. Of course RAAM is in the cards fr the future, but for this year I couldn't find a nicer conclusion of the season than racing in Race around Switzerland. I've always wanted to ride my bike around Switzerland with its beautiful hills and now is my chance to do it, and DO IT FAST! In July I did more or less short regeneration rides and to »wake up« my body I did three 300+ km trainings. The first one went pretty badly, I bonked after 200km, but in the last two I was better and better. I think my form is (at least) good and my preparation should be good enough for the podium. Of course, I will do everything in my power for the victory, because it would mean a lot for me to finish a season on a high note. What motivates me specially for Tortour is the presence of RAAM winner Danny Wyss and I also have a few unsettled accounts with Thomas, who took »my« second place in Race around Slovenia after my asthma episode. If everyhing goes according to plan and the weather won't be extremely bad, I hopw to be able to finish inside magical 40 hours.

My special thanks go to MEDICINALIS LYPRINOL SPORT EDITION who is the main sponsor of my particiation in the Tortour.  And of course family Janezic who were kind enough to have us as their guests in days before the race and their son Denis will be a member of Marko's crew for Tortour.
