Coming to the Oceanside

Here’s a short recap of what we’ve been up to. The flight from Ljubljana over Paris to Los Angeles was uneventful, with lots of drinking and some walking aboard to avoid blood clots. In LA we were happy to see that all the luggage arrived with us, so we were off to fast food for dinner and then first night’s sleep in LA. The next morning I was off to some riding on the Venice Beach and than a quick tour of Hollywood. After that we picked up the RV at El Monte. We were excited to see that this year we’ve got a new one (the 2009 one was so old that you couldn’t keep the drawers in during driving). And we were off to Palm Springs, our oasis for a few days before THE race.

The purpose of Palm Springs stay is to get acclimatised to heat (we had 35-40 C in Palm Springs), for me as well as for the crew. Every day I did a little riding in the hottest part of the day (from noon on). The crew prepared the vehicles, first the pace-car and RV and after Shawn&Tim arrived (on Saturday evening) also the auxilliary car. Otherwise it was a pretty relaxing time, with some swimming, some shopping and even a beer night with Dani Wyss and his crew.Dani is recovering from serious injury, so this year he is “only” doing RAW. It is always nice to pick up some expertise from the guy who has already won RAAM (and his crew).

On Sunday we did a “general rehersal” for RAAM, a training of 100+km with pace car and the 3.car following me, nutrition for RAAM, some heat and lots of wind. The PA system is working, the navigators didn’t make too many mistakes and my legs felt great. Can hardly wait for the race to start...
